Perspectives on Rights

So far, this Brief has discussed the idea of “human rights” without giving consideration to what a “right” actually means or entails. The purpose of the following sections will be to present a few frameworks within which rights can be understood. Disagreements about the nature of rights can often translate into disputes about which rights are most important or whether human rights are even necessary at all.
